What is Claude Cowork?

Cowork is Anthropic's brand new AI agent feature built directly into the Claude desktop app. Think of it as having a superhuman assistant that lives on your computer — one that can actually do things for you, not just answer questions.

Here's the key difference:

  • Regular Claude chat → You ask, it answers. You copy, you paste, you do the work.
  • Claude Cowork → You describe the task, it makes a plan, executes it, and delivers results — while you're AFK.

Cowork bridges the gap between "AI that talks" and "AI that works."

Why Non-Technical People Should Care

You know that friend who's really good with computers? The one you call when you need to organize files, clean up spreadsheets, or make sense of messy documents?

Ways You Can Use Cowork

File Organization

Drop 500 messy downloads into a folder. Tell Claude to organize them by type, date, or project. Walk away.

Document Processing

50 pages of meeting notes? Claude reads every file, pulls key points, and hands you a formatted summary report.

Spreadsheet Creation

Have a pile of screenshots, PDFs, or receipts? Claude can extract the data and build you a clean spreadsheet.

First Drafts from Chaos

Scattered notes across 20 files? Claude synthesizes them into a cohesive first draft — blog post, proposal, whatever you need.

Browser Tasks (with Chrome Extension)

Pair Cowork with Claude in Chrome and it can handle web-based research, form filling, and data gathering.

How It Runs While You're AFK

This is the magic.

Unlike regular AI chat where you're going back and forth constantly, Cowork operates autonomously:

  1. You set the task → "Organize all my client files by company name and create a summary doc for each."
  2. Claude makes a plan → It breaks down the task into steps and shows you the approach.
  3. It executes in parallel → Claude works through multiple files simultaneously, keeping you updated along the way.
  4. It asks before major moves → You stay in control. Claude checks in before taking significant actions so you can course-correct.
  5. You come back to results → The work is done. Files organized. Reports created. Ready to review.
⚠️ Important: The desktop app must remain open for your session to continue. Closing the app ends the session.

Setup Guide (5 Minutes)

Step 1: Get Claude Max

Cowork is currently available as a research preview for Claude Max subscribers only.

Step 2: Download Claude Desktop for macOS

Cowork only runs in the Claude desktop app (not the web version).

Step 3: Open Claude Desktop

Launch the app and sign in with your Claude Max account.

Step 4: Click "Cowork" in the Sidebar

You'll see a new Cowork option in the left sidebar. Click it to enter Cowork mode.

Step 5: Grant Folder Access

Claude will ask you to select a folder on your computer. This is the "workspace" where Claude can:

  • Read files
  • Edit files
  • Create new files

Choose wisely. Start with a specific project folder, not your entire Documents directory.

Step 6: Describe Your Task

Now just tell Claude what you want done. Be specific:

Good: "Organize all the PDFs in this folder by date, rename them with a consistent format (YYYY-MM-DD_filename), and create a summary spreadsheet listing each file."

Vague: "Clean this up."

Step 7: Review the Plan & Let It Work

Claude will show you its plan. Approve it, make adjustments, or ask questions. Once you're good — let it run.

Come back to finished work.

Current Limitations

What to know before you start:

  • macOS only — Windows support not yet available
  • No memory across sessions — Each Cowork session starts fresh
  • Desktop app must stay open — Closing ends the session
  • No sharing — Sessions can't be shared with others yet
  • No Projects support — Can't use within Claude Projects
