Most people organize AI chats by date (whatever is in the left sidebar).

The Breadcrumbs Method organizes AI chats by context:

  • The project you were working on
  • The doc you were writing
  • The task you were completing

So later, you do not hunt through old threads.

You click the breadcrumb right where the work lives.

Principle: Store AI conversations where you will need them again, not where the AI tool stores them.

When to use it (rule of thumb)

If an AI conversation:

  • took more than 10 minutes, or
  • produced something you will reference again

…then anchor it immediately as a breadcrumb.

If it matters, link it.

The basic workflow (3 steps)

1) Copy the unique chat URL

In tools like Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude, etc., each conversation has its own URL.

  • Open the chat you want to keep
  • Copy the URL from the address bar

Tip: The URL typically changes into a “unique thread link” once the chat exists.

2) Paste the link into the doc where you used the output

Go to the exact place where the AI output is being used.

Examples:

  • A project page
  • A client implementation doc
  • A content script page
  • A SOP

Paste the link there.

3) Add a short label (context note)

On the same line, add a quick description so future-you knows what it contains.

Examples:

Make the label action-based: brainstormed, drafted, outlined, summarized, rewrote, planned.
