Every week we get pitches from AI tool founders claiming their category is "exploding." Most of them are wrong. So we did what nobody else does: we pulled real MRR data from 5,031+ tools verified through Stripe and payment dashboards — and looked at which categories are actually growing versus just getting more submissions.

Data Methodology
This analysis covers 6,147 tools listed on SEOGANT with verified MRR data collected between January and March 2025. "Verified" means the founder connected Stripe or uploaded a payment screenshot reviewed by our team. Tools without verification are excluded.

The Surprise Winner: AI Video Tools

Video AI grew faster than any other category in Q1 2025 — median MRR up 34% quarter-over-quarter. The driver isn't consumer tools (those are flat), it's B2B video creation for marketing teams: product demos, social ads, and localization. Tools charging $99–$299/mo to agencies are the sweet spot.

Writing Tools: Saturated but Segmenting

The "write anything" category is officially dead. Tools with generic prompts and no vertical focus are showing negative MRR growth (-4% median). But writing tools with a specific niche — legal documents, medical notes, e-commerce product descriptions — are growing at 12% median MoM.

"Generic writing tools hit a ceiling fast. Our first version competed with 3,000 others. When we focused only on real estate listing descriptions, we tripled MRR in 90 days."

What This Means If You're Building

Three takeaways that the data makes very clear:

  • Automation and Video are the two categories where even median performers are growing fast. If you're starting from scratch, these are the strongest tailwinds right now.
  • Generic writing tools are a trap. The category median is shrinking. Success is only in narrow verticals with high workflow stakes.
  • Analytics tools have the highest median MRR ($31,800) because B2B buyers pay for decision-support tools without blinking.

What This Means If You're Buying

If you're looking to acquire an AI business, Automation and Analytics have the healthiest unit economics in the dataset. Video tools have the fastest growth but also the highest churn in the bottom quartile — make sure you're looking at net MRR growth, not gross.
